Available to view now at the Gympie Regional Gallery, 'Place and Space' is a travelogue by local artist Deborah Upton-Bowman. The artworks capture what Deborah calls the "quintessential outback experience".

Gympie region artist Deborah Upton-Bowman has captured what she calls the “quintessential outback experience” in the form of an exhibition available to view now at the Gympie Regional Gallery.

“Place and Space” is a travelogue “characterised by the pared-back landscape highlighting and/or exaggerating elements and principles of line, shape, texture, colour, tone, size, proportion and contrast”.

A Gympie Regional Council spokeswoman said Deborah worked with mixed media and focused on reusing recycled and repurposed materials.

“Her work captures the landscape and reduces it to a simplified version, considering the dominant aspects and features of the area or history of the land,” the spokeswoman said.

“The particular artworks show how the many facets of the ranges, waterways, vegetation and soil, singularly or combined, provide a multitude of ways in which the landscape can be revealed and identified.

“This exhibition urges viewers to appreciate and connect to country, paying homage to its inhabitants whilst exploring a new way of viewing places and spaces.”

‘Place and Space’ is open until July 22.

Entry to the Gympie Regional Gallery at 39 Nash Street is free, with opening hours from 10am to 4pm, Tuesday to Saturday.
