Flash flooding at Theebine, Glenwood as 100mm of rain falls on region

Emergency crews have rescued a woman from a crash in a stormwater drain as regional areas between Gympie and the Fraser Coast have been inundated by heavy rainfall as scattered showers dump up to 100mm in only a few hours.

Regional roads are being cut and creeks rapidly rising by a splash of intense rainfall between Gympie and Maryborough which has dropped more than 100m in a short period of time on some places.

Scattered showers across the region from northwest of Gympie and around Maryborough have prompted some social media users to warn drivers of flooded roads.

Bureau of Meteorology records show between 9am and 3.20pm 105mm of rain fell at Mt Kanigan.

Another 68mm was recorded in this same period at Glenwood, 60mm at Miva, 50mm at Maryborough and 45mm at Hervey Bay.

The downpours have reportedly caused Scrub Rd at Theebine to be cut by floodwater, where unofficial reports on social media claim up to 85mm has fallen.

A post by Jacki Stander on a Facebook community page showed the creek running near her property at Glenwood showed a footbridge submerged by floodwaters.

Ms Stander said the creek also ran across Harvey Rd.

No road closures are listed on either Gympie Regional Council’s or Fraser Coast Regional Council’s disaster maps.
Emergency crews were called to help two people who crashed into a tree and then spun into a ditch near a stormwater drain at Urangan, on Hervey Bay’s eastern side.

A QFES spokeswoman said their car crashed into the drain at Pulgul St, near Boat Harbour Drive, about 3pm, leaving a woman stuck in the vehicle.

Fireys worked for 15 minutes to free her as stormwater continued flowing through the drain.

A QAS spokeswoman said she suffered abdominal injuries.

Both were in a stable condition.
