Fireys have extinguished a house fire which started at a property near the corner of Myall and Popes roads at Gympie, April 26, 2023.

Multiple firefighting crews attended a house fire near the centre of Gympie on Wednesday morning, amid reports of smoke billowing from the back of a two-storey timber home.

A number of neighbours congregated outside the house in shock at the fumes of smoke, catching sight of the flames between the trees surrounding the property on Myall St.

“I saw it and I started dialling 000 as I was walking down the driveway,” Kwenton Denmar, a resident who was visiting his father-in-law around the corner said.

He started banging on the doors and ringing on the doorbell to see if anyone was home. When no one answered he turned the hose on and started hosing down the back and top verandas.

“I thought it was the air-conditioner because that was the first thing I saw and I was getting hit by plastic and metal.

“The whole back wall was on fire when I got here.”

A QFES spokesman said they received reports of the fire, near the intersection of Myall Street and Popes Road, about 1.10pm on Wednesday.

The back of the house was “well involved” when crews arrived he said, and the blaze was finally extinguished about 30 minutes after first responders were called.

Fireys have blocked part of Popes Rd off to traffic.

Paramedics and police are also at the scene.

No injuries have been reported.
