READY to make a difference, Angela McKenna and Sean Dutton will travel to Africa later this year to volunteer in a sustainable community development program.

Angela, 18, a receptionist at Gympie's All About Eyes Optometrist, and friend Sean, 19, a Sunshine Coast University business student, will do 40 hours of volunteer community service in November as part of a team of 40 Volunteer Eco Students Abroad Program participants from Australia and New Zealand travelling to Swasiland, Africa.

The former James Nash High School students will work with villagers to tackle community problems; they will teach english, help restore buildings and work in conservation.

"It will be a great opportunity to help others and broaden our cultural understanding," Sean said.

"I'm really excited. I think the kids will be really happy even though they don't have as much as us, but I'm afraid I'll get attached to them," Angela said.

Angela and Sean need to raise more than $3000 each to pay for flights, food and accommodation for the VESA program.

They are fundraising with monthly sausage sizzles at Mitre 10 and will hold a fundraising night at Gympie Pines Golf Club on Saturday, August 4.
