The family of a woman critically injured in an alleged hit and run on a quiet suburban Gympie street has made heartbreaking pleas for the 32-year-old’s recovery as she fights for life.

Carla Benson suffered serious injuries after she and her husband Brett were allegedly struck by a vehicle at Sorenson Rd.

According to police, an argument between her, her husband and a 34-year-old Gympie man had escalated when the man got behind the wheel of a nearby vehicle.

Police allege the 34-year-old then ran the couple down.

He later turned himself in to Gympie police and was charged with two counts of attempt to murder, wilful damage, drive motor vehicle while over middle alcohol limit and fail to remain at incident and render assistance.

Carla and Brett Benson were walking their dogs along Sorensen Rd, Gympie, about 10pm Monday night when the alleged hit and run happened.

Her niece Karissa Benson has launched a GoFundMe for Mrs Benson, saying the couple were walking their dogs when the incident happened.

She alleged the driver “tried multiple times to run them down”.

Karissa said Mrs Benson was flown to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital with “extensive life threatening injuries”.

She said Mrs Benson was in a coma.

A hospital spokeswoman said Wednesday Mrs Benson remains in a critical condition.

Meanwhile their dog, “Chopper”, has been missing since the alleged incident and “is feared to have died due to his injuries”.

Mr Benson suffered multiple injuries as well.

“My uncle has a broken leg so on top of this horrific turn of events, he is unable to work. Carla has a very long road to recovery, although the next few days are critical,” Karissa said in the fundraiser.

“We want to fundraise as much as we can, as they have no income, no income protection and unfortunately bills still need to be paid.

“Please help with what you can and our family appreciates and are so grateful for your help.
