Witness recounts cabin fire at Kybong, Gympie

The occupant of a cabin at the Rest Easy Caravan Park south of Gympie managed to save her dog and herself after waking to find the building on fire on Monday morning.

Witnesses said the woman had only lived in the cabin about 10 minutes south of Gympie for four months, and had lost all of her possessions in the blaze. Two cats and chicken are also believed to have perished.

One neighbour said she was inside her cabin and heard a “loud banging” about 8.45am. She then called 000 and informed them of the situation.

“It went up so quickly it was unbelievable,” another neighbour, Yvonne Artho, recounted.

Ms Artho was alerted to the fire by the resident of the gutted home, who “came running in saying ‘get out, my house is on fire’”.

“It was scary,” Ms Artho said.

Emergency crews rushed to a long-term caravan park opposite the old Puma Service Station, as smoke could be seen spiralling up into the air from the Bruce Highway.

The cabin was a single structure unit, while the pine trees above the cabin were on fire from the flames, the fire crews were able to contain the fire.

Apart from some minor burn damage, neighbouring cabins were unaffected.

Three fire crews and one ambulance were on scene, a QFES spokesperson said all the people were out of the building.
