With much anticipation and the rumbling of stomachs, Guzman Y Gomez (GYG) has confirmed it will open in Gympie in February 2024.

The popular Mexican fast food restaurant has been fast-tracking its expansion into the Queensland market in the past few years, after gaining popularity since its first store opened in Brisbane in 2010.

The Gympie store will be located in a new development to be built on the corner of the Bruce Hwy and Excelsior Rd.

The site was sold by Harcourts to Spring Projects, a Brisbane-based development company in late June 2023, real estate agent Nathan O’Neill said.

Demolition of the existing buildings on site has started and will finish in the next fortnight, with construction starting immediately after, he said.

Subway, already on the site, will be closed for this time, but will open again in less than a month.

“This will follow a complete refit of the internals and externals of the store,” Mr O’Neill said.

Social media was blowing up with excitement at the news on Thursday.

Some questioned the location, pointing out traffic issues with the three busy intersections surrounding the site which also service Aldi, McDonalds and Subway, and are adjacent to the Gympie Central Shopping Centre.

“I’m excited to see it come to town, as far as the intersection goes common sense needs to be used,” Marlene Owen commented.

“Really should have put it where the old car yard is but happy it's coming; a big step for Gympie I’d like to see Fresh and Save, Silly Solly's and a better Kmart,” Tessa Palmer Ross wrote.

The Gympie store will be one of 10 drive-thrus the chain is expecting to open in the coming year.

In 2024, the chain expects to have almost 80 stores across Queensland.
