Gympie’s ageing and leaky water system has continued to struggle, with a burst water main cutting access to more than 160 Mary Valley properties on Tuesday morning.

Gympie Regional Council communications manager Sharna Rowley said work crews were called to fix a burst pipe on Yabba Rd just before 8am.

She said they were rerouted from another town to carry out the emergency repairs.

Water had to be cut to 165 properties for the three hours needed to fix the pipe.

Gympie’s struggling water and sewerage systems have been in the spotlight amid revelations the region’s water service was at risk of failing within a year without urgent repairs.

A new report to the council has revealed the service failed to meet almost half of its key performance targets for the 2020-21 financial year.

The council has made upgrading this infrastructure a priority in the 2021-22 budget.
