Tributes are flowing for legendary artist Robert “Bob” Gammage, who died unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 19.

It is not known how old Mr Gammage was when he passed away.

Mr Gammage, who was best known as the artist behind House of TOLA at the Eumundi markets, spent his life travelling the country and attending various arts and music festivals, where he would showcase his paintings.

He frequented the first several Mary River Festivals and was known to frequent the Eumundi Markets on the Sunshine Coast, often barefoot and dressed in flowy pants and shirts.

Mr Gammage painted everything from live musicians to social settings and days at the beach, with his artworks often snapped up shortly after being showcased.

His facebook account has more than 2140 friends, all of which were heartbroken at the news of his passing.

Old friend and fellow public artist Liz Robins, who first met Bob in the 1990s, described him as a “true empath” someone who “accepted others regardless of their differences”.

Furthermore, he was a legendary artist who left a profound impact on the community.

“He had a knack of capturing light and colour and sound in a way I have only seen him do,” Ms Robins said.

She described him as a “perfect listener” who wanted to bring out the best in every person he met.

Mr Gammage never spoke much about his past, but Ms Robins said it was clear he came from an educated background and was always very articulate; something he tried to encourage in his friends’ children.

But above all, Mr Gammage would be remembered as someone to greet you in the warmest way.

“The minute he (saw) you, it doesn’t matter how far a distance, (he would come towards you with) open arms …(and a) big smile,” Ms Robins said.

It is yet to be confirmed if Mr Gammage will have a funeral service,

However, his website will be transformed into a community hub to support upcoming artists and authors.
