A driver has been rescued by nearby Upper Glastonbury residents after his car became stranded in floodwaters about 20km southwest of Gympie.

Police, firefighting and swift water rescue crews were called to the scene on Friday, near the intersection of Glastonbury Creek Rd and Portas Rd at Upper Glastonbury, just before midday.

It was reported the car and its occupant drove into rising floodwaters.

Surrounding flash flooding and cut roads prevented the emergency crews from getting close enough to the car and its driver so about 1pm the rescue chopper was called to help.

However the man was ultimately pulled to safety with the help of some nearby neighbours, who had been watching the situation unfold.
