On Wednesday morning, 33 bike riders began their 710km pilgrimage from Gympie to Brisbane, for the annual Bikes4Burns fundraiser.

For the last 15 years, a group of volunteer cyclists from QFES and QPS have joined the annual ride which aims to raise funding for burns research at the Children’s Hospital Foundation.

The money raised will be deposited directly into researching the most effective treatment for childhood burns and scar management.

Thirty-five cyclists signed up for the fundraiser this year, accompanied by 16 support crew.

They will travel for seven days from Gympie to Brisbane, stopping at different locations along the way.

Community Partnerships Manager for the Children’s Hospital Foundation Angela Ryan said over the past 15 years more than $758,000 has been raised from supporters of the ride.

“That’s gone to improving the treatment options and also the outcomes for the kids,” she said.

Even though the ride has already started, Ms Ryan said it was never too late to donate to the cause.

“The best place for people to find out where to donate is from the bikes for burns facebook page, and in the about section there’s a donate link there,” she said.

She also said all donations would receive a tax-deductible receipt.

So far, $13,446 have been raised from the annual ride.

After leaving the Gympie Fire Station at 9am on Wednesday, the group will travel 104km to their first stop in Murgon before travelling to their next destination.
