Gregory George Glebow pleads guilty to murder of fellow inmate at Maryborough prison

VIOLENT prison lifer to serve 30 more years for execution-style murder of inmate just two days before he was due to be released.

A VIOLENT prison lifer jailed 12 years ago for a savage hate murder will serve at least 30 more years behind bars for the execution-style murder of a young inmate just two days before his release for minor offences.

Gregory George Glebow, 39, pleaded guilty in the Brisbane Supreme Court yesterday for the "cold" and "cowardly" aggravated murder of petty criminal Leonard Raymond Gordon, 22, at the Maryborough Correctional Centre on October 9, 2012.

When asked to enter his plea -- an unrepentant and hostile Glebow stood in handcuffs and leg irons of an enclosed glass dock of Court 10 and loudly declared: "I gladly plead guilty."

The court was told a "strongly built" Glebow calmly picked up a "two pronged" metal bar -- used by prisoner's to do chin-ups -- and without warning callously struck an unsuspecting Gordon with such force the attack could be best described as an execution.

Prosecutor Ben Power, in written submissions tendered in court, said Glebow was aware Gordon was scheduled for release -- but that in all likelihood the choice of victim was "entirely random."

"(Glebow) walked up behind Leonard Gordon who was sitting on a bench in the prison yard and murdered him by striking him in the side of the head," Mr Power said in his submissions.

"The blow was struck with such force that a hole was punched through Leonard Gordon's skull, killing him almost instantly.

"(Glebow) showed no emotion about what he had done and in fact took steps to have others secure his property and then reported the killing to a prison guard."

Glebow was first sentenced to life imprisonment in March 2002 for the bashing murder of Brisbane father Michael Christopher Greer after mistakenly assuming he was gay.

Mr Greer was punched and kicked repeatedly by Glebow and a mate while repeatedly calling him a "faggot" at Manly, on Brisbane's southern bayside, on March 4, 2002.

Mr Greer died nine months after the attack as a result of fatal blood clots which formed on his lungs as a result of the attack.

Justice David Boddice yesterday sentenced Glebow to a mandatory term of life imprisonment.

However, under Queensland Law Glebow will serve at least 30-years behind bars and is ineligible to apply for parole before May 2044.

Mr Power said at the time of his slaying Mr Gordon was in prison on a charge of wilful damage and would have been released two days later had he not been murdered.

Glebow, who smiled and laughed during sentencing submissions and while prison CCTV vision of his violent attack was shown to the court, at one stage erupted in a rage and yelled a string of expletives and abuse at Mr Power.

"(What your saying) is a load of shit. If I had to I would do it again you f***ing c***sucker," Glebow yelled at the top of his voice.

"Only I know why I killed him and I will take it to my grave."

Barrister James Godbolt, for Glebow, said his client had requested he make no submissions at all to the court.

Justice Boddice, in sentencing Glebow, said: "(The murder) was a cold, calculated act of callousness to a young unaware man."

He said it was clear Glebow felt no remorse for what he had done, demonstrated limited chances of rehabilitation and was posed a significant danger to the community if ever released.

On three separate occasions Glebow responded to the judge's comments by saying: "That's exactly right, your Honour."

Glebow's lengthy list of violent crimes include his 2007 conviction for bashing three police officers at suburban station's holding cell while being transferred from Wacol's Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre for a court appearance.

It is expected Glebow will now be housed in the Woodford Correctional Centre's maximum security to serve out his two life sentences.
