Australians reminded to keep safe in the water over summer

Three people have been rescued after they were caught in a rip on a Gold Coast beach.

A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman said paramedics assessed three men at Broadbeach about 8.30am Sunday.

One of the men was taken to Pindara Private Hospital in a stable condition.

The other two did not require further treatment.

It comes just days after lifeguards pleaded with swimmers to follow safety warnings in the wake of the drowning of a Gold Coast man in his 30s.

He went into cardiac arrest after being pulled from the water at Main Beach on Wednesday afternoon, but later died in hospital.

Lifeguards have pleaded with swimmers to follow safety warnings after a Gold Coast man in his 30s drowned in rough surf.

Two men, aged in their 30s from the Gold Coast, reportedly ignored warnings from lifeguards not to enter the water before being rescued at Main Beach just after 3pm Wednesday.

One man went into cardiac arrest and was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition but later died.

The other man was taken to hospital in a stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.

Queensland Ambulance Service supervisor Adam Flori said swimmers who ignored safety messages were putting themselves and rescuers at risk.

There have been about five beach rescues on the Gold Coast so far this week.

“It’s frustrating because it doesn’t appear the messages are being heard,” Mr Flori said.

“It’s not hard – swim between the flags, swim during patrolled hours, don’t swim of a night, don’t swim in unsupervised or unpatrolled sections of the beach.”

Surf Life Saving Queensland spokesman Nathan Fyfe urged people to encourage their mates to do the right thing in the water.

“Be a mate, pull them up and say ‘hey this is stupid, let’s walk 300m metres to a patrolled location’,” he said.

Ninety minutes after the incident on Wednesday a woman was also rescued from the surf at Burleigh Heads.
