Extra fire crews have been sent to reinforce efforts to contain a large grass fire near Mount Larcom, which started after a trailer lost a tyre.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said one crew was initially called to the junction between Gladstone Mount Larcom Rd and Quarry Rd about 2.20pm.

The fire reportedly started after a trailer being towed by a car lost a tyre, causing sparks that ignited as the driver pulled to the side of the road.

“When the first crew arrived, the fire was approximately 40m by 200m long,” the spokeswoman said.

“The fire at one end has then gone up a hill, and at that stage we called for two additional crews.”

The spokeswoman said the fire was burning along the rail corridor, and all rail lines in the area had been closed to trains.

The fire was not currently threatening any property, though there was a shed with machinery and vehicles nearby.

The spokeswoman said the fire was reduced to about 100mx10m and was burning on the edge of the road.
