Ongoing issues after storm lashes 1770 township, power issues impacting water supply as council urges residents to conserve

A destructive storm has lashed a historic Queensland township, with power issues expected to impact water supply for 1770 and Agnes Water in days ahead. See the pictures from the ground.

The destructive storm which ripped through an historic Queensland township last week, uprooting trees and damaging homes, has also cut power to crucial water infrastructure as council urges residents to conserve water.

The 1770 township was hit by a “freak storm” early Friday morning, with SES and council crews sent out to clear roads and assess the damage.

Trees were uprooted and launched into homes, caravans and intersections as the storm loomed over 1770, narrowly avoiding nearby Agnes Water.

Agnes Water and Seventeen Seventy residents are now being encouraged to conserve water over the coming days as the storms have caused a power supply issue at the Agnes Water Treatment Plant.

Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said Council is focused on repairing this damage as soon as possible.

“Council has sourced generators capable of powering the facility and damage assessments are underway,” Mayor Burnett said.

Council is encouraging residents to reduce water consumption during this time as we work through this priority issue.

Local, Wayne Proudfoot said the damage was severe but isolated, with most people from nearby Agnes oblivious to the storm as they woke.

“The freak storm has smashed through the 1770 township last night uprooting trees, with branches and flying debris smashing windows and damaging houses,” Mr Proudfoot said.

“Council workers and SES crews were out early to clear the roads and paths and help residents clear their driveways,” he said.

Gladstone Regional Council confirmed the significant storm damage.

“Our Roads and Parks team have spent the morning clearing debris in Seventeen Seventy following last night’s storm that swept through the area,” council said.

“A majority of debris has been cleared and set aside for removal next week ... please avoid touching or removing this debris for your own safety.”

Authorities urge residents and visitors to be cautious over the weekend and avoid handling debris as not all the damage has been assessed or cleared yet.

Any damage to parks or roads can be reported on the Council website.
