A teenager bit a police officer who was trying to restrain him on the arm, a court heard.

Xander Stephen Richard Crowe, 18, pleaded guilty on Friday to contravene direction or requirement, serious assault police officer by biting spitting etc. and failure to appear in accordance with undertaking.

Prosecutor Kelvin Boyd detailed Crowe’s offending which originated from a consultation at Gladstone Base Hospital on April 24, around 10.40pm.

Xander Stephen Richard Crowe, 18, pleaded guilty to three charges in Gladstone Magistrates Court on Friday.

“When the defendant arrived he was yelling and swearing loudly at staff which police saw was making other patients and staff nearby anxious,” he said.

“The defendant’s behaviour led to hospital staff requesting the assistance of no less than four police officers to control him, with a doctor making the decision to sedate him.

“During the sedation process he was uncooperative and aggressive, suddenly turning his head to one side and biting a Senior Constable on his elbow.

“The bite by the defendant caused a red mark to the elbow area of the man, Crowe was issued a notice to appear when police came to his mother’s house on May 4, 2021.”

Magistrate Bevan Manthey said Crowe was fortunate the bite he inflicted on the police officer did not pierce his skin.

“You would have been looking at a very different sentence if the bite had in fact pierced the skin of the officer you bit, however, that is not the case,” Mr Manthey said.

Crowe was convicted and sentenced to two years probation. Convictions were recorded.
