A woman allegedly gave her partner a plank of wood he used as a weapon in the chaotic New Auckland brawl earlier this month, a court heard.

Tahlea Nicole Denniss, 19, applied for bail in Gladstone Magistrates Court on Tuesday on seven charges including unlawful possession of a weapon.

Denniss’ lawyer Rio Ramos said her client’s continued detention was unjust given the fact her involvement in the incident was limited.

“There is no specific description of what my client was doing at the time of the offences,” Ms Ramos said.

“The statement from one of the witnesses refers to the larger girl, there is no specific references to my client who is of a smaller build.

“My client’s involvement started when she heard the commotion from the fight and ran outside to see her partner being hit by a couple of people.

“She ran over and jumped into the melee in order to protect her partner from sustaining anymore damage and in the process was hit with a metal pole to her back several times.”

Reading from a witness statement, police prosecutor Carl Spargo said two girls allegedly brought out big lumps of wood and handed them to Logan (Moroney) and his mate.

“There are at least two witnesses who identified this defendant was actively involved in participating by handing a piece of wood to one of the co-offenders who has used it to inflict serious injuries,” he said.

Magistrate Bevan Manthey said Denniss was a high risk of decamping, reoffending or interfering with witnesses if she was granted bail.

“The prosecution said she was an active participant, if she is convicted she will spend a significant amount of time in custody,” she said.

“She has failed to show cause as to why she should be released on bail, her detention is justified and her bail application refused.

Denniss’ matters will be heard again on February 1, 2022.
