A Central Queensland court has heard about a woman’s dramatic fall from grace - from school captain and Queensland soccer representative to the grips of drug addition.

Christy Lee Phillips, 37, pleaded guilty in Biloela Magistrates Court on July 14 to possessing cannabis, methamphetamine, a controlled drug, hypodermic syringes, drug utensils and a stolen number plate.

The court heard that on December 3, 2019, police executed a search warrant at a Moura residence.

Inside the house, officers found 99g of cannabis in a plastic container on the kitchen table.

Clip-seal bags were also recovered, containing less than 1g of methamphetamine.

Police also found hypodermic syringes which Phillips said she had used to inject meth.

Then on January 19, 2020, police executed another search warrant at Phillips’ Moura residence.

Officers found a number plate in a cabinet in the lounge room which did not belong to Phillips.

She said she had found it on the side of the road and kept it.

A clip-seal bag containing half a pill (controlled drug - anti-depressant) was also seized.

Phillips’ solicitor said the reason for the delays in these matters getting to this point was due to lengthy case conferencing with police.

He then told a story of Phillips’ dramatic fall from grace due to drug addiction.

“Since the time that all this happened, she has been clean now for some, last count it was 14 months,” the solicitor said.

“Obviously her appearance has changed dramatically since the first time she appeared before the court.

“A good friend of hers died in a car accident, she sort of went off the rails.

“She has a history of being on drugs - from the age of 24 until the time she decided enough’s enough.

“She had a good life being brought up.

“She was school captain, sports captain, played soccer for Queensland, good school grades etc.”

The solicitor said Phillips got involved with drugs, methamphetamine initially, through her partner at the time.

“She’s now clearly making inroads into getting her life on track and hopefully she stays that way,” he said.

The court heard that Phillips had no criminal history prior to these offences and Magistrate Philippa Beckinsale said it was unusual for someone to be using drugs for that amount of time and not come before the courts.

She placed Phillips on 12 months’ probation with conditions including drug testing, and fined her $200.

No conviction was recorded.
