A Central Queensland man is accused of dragging a woman by the hair, punching her in the face and threatening to kill her with a chainsaw, a court has heard.

Matthew Thomas Johnson, 53, appeared in Gladstone Magistrates Court on Monday where he made a bail application.

He is charged common assault.

The court heard Mr Johnson was in a show cause position and the prosecution opposed bail.

It was told Mr Johnson was employed and he had been in a long relationship with the alleged victim.

Police prosecutor Jennifer Leach said Mr Johnson had allegedly not only repeatedly threatened to kill the woman, but allegedly threatened to do so using a chainsaw.

The court heard that police allegedly saw bruising on the alleged victim’s arms, and she said she had been “dragged by the hair” and punched in the face.

Police allege they saw a red mark under one of the woman’s eyes “consistent with assault.”

Solicitor Bianca Wieland claimed her client did not threaten the woman with the chainsaw.

“He was fixing it when she approached him in the garage... it would not have started as he was trying to fix it at the time,” Ms Wieland said.

“He also does not concede that there was any punches in the face.”

Ms Wieland said bail conditions could mitigate any risk and Mr Johnson had a family member in court to support him.

Acting Magistrate Stephen Byrne noted that Mr Johnson had a “limited criminal history”.

Mr Byrne added the alleged offence before the court was “very, very serious.”

He granted bail with conditions including Mr Johnson reside at an address suitable to police, report to police twice a week, not contact or approach the woman along with other conditions.

“Let me warn you, Sir, that any breach by you of your bail, particularly in relation to (the woman), I can absolutely guarantee you will see your bail disappear before your very eyes,” Mr Byrne said.

“And you will sit right where you are now until your matters are finalised.”

Mr Johnson’s matters were adjourned to July 22.
