A Gladstone drink-driver who crashed her car and then fled the scene while almost four times over the legal limit, has faced court.
Margaret Rose Cox, 66 pleaded guilty in Gladstone Magistrates Court to the offence.
Police prosecutor Jennifer Leach told the court that Cox abandoned her vehicle in the middle of a Gladstone street after she was involved in a single vehicle crash while intoxicated.
The court heard that Cox had been drinking all afternoon and drove her vehicle towards her nearby friend’s house with the intent to continue drinking.
Ms Leach said Cox was driving along Bell St, Barney Point, about 7.40pm on May 4 when she crashed her blue sedan into a concrete bollard causing significant damage to the front of her vehicle and tyres.
Enquiries were then made by police, including speaking with witnesses of the crash who gave a profile of the accused, and a short time later Cox was located at a nearby house.
Cox was then taken to Gladstone Hospital where she returned a blood-alcohol reading of 0.181.
Cox, who was self-represented in court, told Magistrate John Milburn that she was ashamed of her conduct, made no excuses, and that she had learnt her lesson.
“I fled because I was so frightened, I’m just glad that I didn’t hit another vehicle and thankfully no-one was hurt because of me,” Cox said.
Magistrate Milburn acknowledged the early plea of guilty and noted that a disqualified driver’s licence would impact Cox’s mobility because of long-term knee and back pain.
Cox was fined $1200 and disqualified from driving for 13 months.
A traffic conviction was recorded.
