A Gladstone Magistrate has ridiculed a mother of five who ‘took the punt’ to drive and got caught.

Kimberley Donna Louise Cawley, 32, pleaded guilty to driving a motor vehicle without a driver’s licence disqualified by court order.

On May 29, around 1.30pm, Calliope police intercepted a grey Holden sedan on Dalrymple Drive, Toolooa.

Cawley identified herself and confessed to police her licence was disqualified by court order.

Police checks confirmed Cawley’s confession and that she was disqualified on May 25 for six months.

Cawley said she knew she shouldn’t have been driving without a licence and was subsequently issued a notice to appear in the Gladstone Magistrates Court.

Cawley’s duty lawyer Rio Ramos said her client’s partner was also suspended at the time and it was a matter of who drove at the time.

“She took the punt to drive, she made the choice and she got caught,” Magistrate Bevan Manthey said.

“I need to demonstrate to you and to the Gladstone community that unlicensed driving puts the community at risk, there is a huge problem with it in this region.”

Mr Manthey convicted and sentenced Cawley to two months imprisonment wholly suspended for two years and suspended her from driving for two years. A conviction was recorded.
