A Gladstone man cashed in on a woman’s misfortune and went on a spending spree with her bank card, a court heard.
Kevin Douglas Anderson, 28, pleaded guilty in Gladstone Magistrates Court on December 3 to 14 charges including stealing.
Police prosecutor Senior Constable Carl Spargo told the court that on March 19, about 1.30pm, police received a complaint from the victim about a stolen bank card and fraudulent transactions.
“Enquiries were conducted with staff from Bottle-O Toolooa, Foodworks, Metro Petroleum and the Young Australian Hotel,” Snr Const Spargo said.
“Police saw, via CCTV footage, Anderson conducting each of the fraudulent transactions.”
On March 19, about 10am, the victim was walking along Toolooa Street when she stopped and dropped her bank card on the ground before entering a business.
Anderson picked up the card and left, however, a witness recognised him and saw him pick up the bank card.
Anderson started spending straight away - $49 on a bottle of liquor at Bottle-O Toolooa via PayWave.
His spending spree finally ended at 11.51am when the victim’s card declined when Anderson was attempting to buy a $10 Telstra product online.
On April 1, investigators from Gladstone Property Team attended a Toolooa Street address and spoke with Anderson.
He denied any knowledge of the offences, however, was subsequently issued a notice to appear in court.
Magistrate Bevan Manthey sentenced Anderson to nine months’ imprisonment, wholly suspended as he had already served 54 days’ pre-sentence custody.
Convictions were recorded.
