A man who shattered a glass bottle over his victim’s head after an argument was sentenced in the Gladstone Magistrates Court on Friday.

Jonathan William Popp, 40, pleaded guilty to three counts of public nuisance and one count of assault occasioning bodily harm.

Prosecutor Carl Spargo tendered Popp’s nine-page criminal history which included imprisonment orders for domestic violence, serious assault police and assault occasioning bodily harm.

A court heard that on April 10, around 10.50pm, Popp and his victim were in their separate caravans at Affordable Accommodation Caravan Park on Toolooa Street.

The victim heard a man yelling and checked it out, finding Popp at the front of his caravan yelling loudly.

The victim approached Popp and asked him to settle down, to which Popp became verbally abusive.

The pair argued and Popp went back into his caravan, before a witness approached the victim and had a conversation.

The witness went to the door of Popp’s caravan and said something unknown to him.

Popp then exited his caravan and swore at the victim, who was facing away from him, several times.

Popp then struck the victim on the right side of his face with a glass bottle, forcing the victim to his knees and shattering the bottle.

A court heard the victim felt great pressure to his face and became disorientated, he was helped up by a bystander and escorted to safety.

At 11pm police arrived at the caravan park and spoke to both parties involved, with the victim later being transported to hospital for treatment of his injuries.

When police interviewed Popp he said he consumed half a carton of beer and that, “He come at me bro so I f---ing swung. Ya know I had a bottle in my hand and I swung what I had. I swung. F---ing oath.”

Popp was issued a notice to appear in the Gladstone Magistrates Court on May 8 after further inquiries.

Acting Magistrate Paul Byrne convicted and sentenced Popp to 21 months imprisonment, with a parole eligibility date of November 16, 2021.
