An out-of-work plumber has faced court after he was involved in a brazen theft from a Gladstone charity store.

Jason Williams, 42, pleaded guilty in Gladstone Magistrates Court on May 3 to stealing.

Police prosecutor Jennifer Leach said about 5.15pm on December 18 last year, Williams was a passenger in a ute which arrived at The Salvation Army Family Store on Auckland Street, Gladstone.

Ms Leach said within the carpark at the store, which was closed at the time, were various donation bins and other items that had been donated to the charity were sitting on the ground around these bins.

The prosecutor said Williams and an unknown female loaded various donated items into the ute including a lounge, as well as several boxes and bags containing items.

“After completely loading their utility vehicle with a variety of items, (Williams) and the unknown female returned to their vehicle and left the carpark,” Ms Leach said.

Williams was charged in January this year.

The court heard Williams had an eight-page Queensland criminal history which included previous dishonesty offences as well as drug offences.

It was told he also had a three-page New South Wales criminal record.

Solicitor Bianca Wieland said Williams had instructed this offending wasn’t his idea and he was not the instigator.

Ms Wieland said Williams was “very remorseful” for his actions and at the time of this offence, he was on a suspended sentence for driving (traffic) offences.

Ms Wieland said Williams was a qualified roof plumber who was currently unemployed due to losing his driver’s licence.

Before handing down penalty, Acting Magistrate Mary Buchanan said deterrence was a factor in this case despite Williams saying it was not his idea to steal from the charity.

“You engaged in it,” Ms Buchanan said.

Ms Buchanan ordered Williams perform 40 hours of unpaid community service and a conviction was recorded.

In relation to the two suspended sentences that Williams was on, Ms Buchanan extended the operational periods of both by three months.
