Gladstone mum Rebecca Maddin sentenced for dealing drugs

A Central Queensland mother busted dealing drugs originally told police she got the money from poker machine winnings.

A Central Queensland mother of two busted dealing drugs has been sentenced after a raid at her home.

Rebecca Rachelle Maddin, 33, was sentenced in the District Court at Gladstone after pleading guilty to 11 counts of supplying dangerous drugs.

The court heard that on November 18, 2020, police executed a search warrant at Maddin’s home.

They seized her mobile phone and a download of that revealed text messages and Facebook messages which made it clear she had been supplying drugs to people.

There were eight actual cannabis supplies and three preparatory supplies over a period of three-and-a-half months.

The court heard Maddin supplied cannabis to seven customers - one of the drug deals was an ounce of cannabis for $3300.

During an interview with police, Maddin said the money was winnings from poker machines.

She had a one-page criminal history with no similar offending on it.

Barrister Jordan Ahlstrand said Maddin was a mother of two who had been employed post-offending and she was currently studying an online diploma in human resources.

He said Maddin’s drug use was limited to cannabis during the time of a dysfunctional relationship - that relationship had since ended and Maddin was now drug free.

The court heard she had not reoffended since the bust at her home in 2020.

Judge Amanda McDonnell sentenced Maddin to 12 months’ jail, wholly suspended for an operational period of 18 months.

Convictions were recorded.
