A woman who crashed a car while nearly five times over the legal alcohol limit was so drunk she “could not remember driving”.

Rebecca Constance Tyrrell, 25, pleaded guilty in Gladstone Magistrates Court on March 6 to drink driving.

Police prosecutor Jennifer Leach said that about midnight on December 15 last year, police attended a single vehicle crash on the Dawson Highway, West Gladstone.

Ms Leach said Tyrrell had crashed the vehicle into a median strip fence.

“Police required (Tyrrell) to provide a specimen of breath at the scene because she had been involved in a traffic crash,” Ms Leach said.

“That breath test returned an indication that (Tyrrell) was severely intoxicated.”

Ms Leach said Tyrrell was taken by ambulance to hospital for assessment.

The results of a test confirmed Tyrrell’s blood alcohol concentration was .234.

The court heard that on February 1 during a police interview, Tyrrell said she “could not remember driving, only crashing.”

Ms Leach said Tyrrell explained that she had plans to stay with friends on the night of her crash, but she had an anxiety attack and decided to drive home.

The court heard that Tyrrell had no previous offending of this sort on her traffic history.

A self-represented Tyrrell told Acting Magistrate Mary Buchanan that she was on medication which was affected when she drank alcohol.

Tyrrell explained that she had sought help via Beyond Blue for her mental health “to ensure nothing like this ever happens again”.

Ms Buchanan accepted that Tyrrell was remorseful, before fining her $1200 and disqualifying her from driving for eight months.

A traffic conviction was recorded.
