A Queensland-based developer is pushing ahead with plans for a new shopping centre complex at Agnes Water, with Gladstone Regional Council already approving the development.
Stockwell Agnes Water Pty Ltd has taken over a Round Hill Road site from Captain Cook Holdings Pty Ltd and plans to develop a shopping centre, childcare centre, vet, fitness centre, and other shopfronts.
The land proposed to be developed covers 30.6ha with 6.50ha of structure.
It will be a seven stage development with the first two stages built first, and land set aside for the other stages in the future.
The development was originally lodged on March 22, 2017 and further development documents have been submitted to council periodically.
Discovery Coast Tourism and Commerce held a members meeting in August where the development was discussed.
The meeting’s newsletter shows the complex and a service station were approved by the council in 2019.
Construction is poised to begin in late 2021 and take about 12 months.
It’s intended the centre will help reduce the need for Discovery Coast locals to travel to Gladstone or Bundaberg for goods.
DCTC president Amber Rodgers said the organisation was always really pleased when there was new investment in the area.
“Whenever there’s growth, we know it will provide something new and different,” she said.
“What we expect is there’ll be new things available to people of Agnes Water and Seventeen Seventy.”
She hopes the new centre will employ locals.
However, there is no confirmation at this stage of which supermarket chain will come to town.
The developer was contacted for comment but did not respond.
