The vice-president of a Gladstone surf life saving club branded his incredible achievement of winning a prestigious award as, “good and positive feedback”.

Tannum Sands Surf Life Saving Club’s John Buck was recently named the Surf Life Saving Queensland 2020/2021 Wide Bay Capricorn Branch Volunteer of the Year.

Having moved to the region with his wife and three children seven years ago, the Buck family started their volunteering journey with Tannum Sands SLSC around the same time.

“We have lived regionally for the last sort of 20 years so the opportunity to get involved in the community that way has always been something we quite enjoy doing,” Mr Buck said.

“It (Tannum Sands SLSC) is a great culture, fantastic for the kids, in fact absolutely awesome for the kids, and it was something we wanted to be a part of.”

Mr Buck said the club offered a range of benefits to the community.

“But the one they work hardest at is training people, lifesavers, so that we can patrol the beach during the busy time of the year,” he said.

When questioned about what his favourite part of volunteering with the Tannum Sands SLSC was, Mr Buck was not short of answers.

“I get to work with like-minded people, these are people who have a little bit of time up their sleeve and want to support the club and community,” he said.

“Surf lifesaving is such a great environment that giving back to the community, even a small amount, is great fun.”

Mr Buck said he hoped his kids continued their engagement with the club into the future.

“They will go on and do their own things, but hopefully they will bring their kids back to the club because it is such a good culture,” he said.
