Ergon Energy: 5000 customers without power in Gladstone, Boyne, Tannum, Calliope

Thousands of Central Queensland residents lost power on Friday afternoon, forcing major retailers such as Woolworths to limit stock and fast food, service stations and bottle shops to close.

A power outage has wiped out electricity across the Gladstone and Tannum Sands regions.

Thousands of residents across Central Queensland have been left without power on Friday afternoon, with some businesses forced to close their doors while repairs were carried out.

Just after 4pm, residents across Gladstone, Boyne Island and Tannum Sands and smaller surrounding areas lost power to their homes and businesses.

According to the Ergon Energy website, 5021 customers in the suburbs of Benaraby, Boyne Island, Gladstone, Iveragh, Tannum Sands, Wurdong Heights and Calliope lost power at 4.06pm due to damage requiring emergency repairs.

An Ergon Energy spokesman advised that crews were working on repairs and most residents should have power returned by about 7pm.

Power was returned to most customers across the southern Gladstone region by 6.30pm.

He said customers in the Wurdong area could be out for a couple of hours longer.

He advised the cause of the outage was a broken cross arm on a pole on a major feeder line and crews would carry out repairs as quickly as possible, but safety was their top priority.

Usually bustling businesses, such as fast food outlets, grocery stores, service stations, and bottle shops have been forced to close as a result.

Police are also directing traffic at major intersection due to a loss of power to traffic lights. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel.
