Queensland’s Co-ordinator-General has highlighted any environmental impacts that must be considered before a hydrogen and ammonia production facility at Yarwun, near Gladstone is built and is inviting residents to have their say on the project.

The Co-ordinator-General welcomes Queenslanders to have their say on what should be “considered during the project’s assessment”.

Deputy Premier and Minister State Development Steven Miles said the announcement was another step forward on an exciting project for Central Queensland as an emerging hydrogen superpower.

“I announced in April that the project had been declared a co-ordinated project and that H2U and Orica had made a strategic partnership agreement to initiate the project’s first phase,” Mr Miles said.

“Commitments like this help to propel Queensland towards becoming a clean energy powerhouse and highlight the benefits of investing into Queensland’s regions, creating employment opportunities in the future.”

Subject to approvals, the $4.7 billion project is proposed to commence stage-one construction in 2023 with production kicking off towards the end of 2025.

Orica and H2U in partnership together estimate the progression of this Hub will create more than 550 jobs during construction and 140 ongoing operational jobs.

Minister Regional Development and Manufacturing and Member for Gladstone Glenn Butcher said projects like this were highlighting the benefits of investing in Queensland’s regions and creating jobs for the future.

“This project presents export opportunities for green ammonia at the Port of Gladstone, creating even more opportunities in Gladstone,” Mr Butcher said.

Hydrogen Utility (H2U) has presented a staggered development process of two stages, with plans to design a start of the art industrial hub in the Gladstone State Development Area with export infrastructure at Fisherman’s Landing Wharf, Port of Gladstone.

This news comes following the state government’s coal royalty tax hike and a BHP announcement shutting down the progress of the Blackwater South metallurgical coal mine.

Until 5pm on the September 13, 2022 anyone from the public can make a comment on any environmental factors that need to be considered ahead of the project. Visit H2-HubTm Gladstone for more information.
