A Central Queensland football club will be questioning why a funding commitment may have been cut in half by Labor following Tuesday’s budget.
During the federal election campaign, Australian Labor Party candidate Matt Burnett said an Albanese Government would provide $2.5m for the Boyne Tannum Sharks Football Club.
The money was allocated for a new clubhouse and facilities at the soccer club located on Jacaranda Drive.
Following the election, the official ‘Labor for Flynn’ Facebook page — operated by the local ALP branch — congratulated Prime Minister Anthony Albanese before listing a number of local community funding projects, including $2.5m for the Sharks.
“This is what a Labor Government will deliver for our community,” the post read.
However, following Tuesday’s budget, a document sent by Queensland Labor Senator, Murray Watt’s office had a revised figure of $1.3m for the soccer club, $1.2m short of the election pledge.
After contacting the Senator’s office for clarification, The Observer was told a response would be provided by the relevant Minister’s office.
This community funding is the responsibility of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister, Catherine King.
No response was provided by time of publication.
The Boyne Tannum Sharks Football Club was approached for comment but a spokesperson said they would wait to hear from the Department.
More to come.
