THEY'RE five elements of driver safety which are the major causes of crashes and fatality and this week local police will be actively enforcing them for Queensland Road Safety Week.

Road Safety Week focuses on the Fatal Five - speeding, inattention, seatbelts and fatigue, sharing the road and impaired driving, all elements which can cause accidents.

School based police officer Senior Constable Lilley Voigt said although police would be actively enforcing the Fatal Five, drivers should always be aware.

"Drivers shouldn't just be wary of the fatal five next week," Snr Cost Voigt said.

"They should be aware of them all the time."

The 2015 Queensland Road Safety Week initiative is about community engagement, awareness and education of road users to understand greater individual and community ownership of road safely.

The campaign is also used to reduce road trauma. Throughout next week each day will have a different Fatal Five focus.

Today will see police enforce distractions, Tuesday will have police monitor speeding motorists, Wednesday will focus on fatigue and restraints, Thursday is sharing the road and to finish the campaign on Friday police will focus on drink and drug driving.

Across the state more than 550 road safety related events and activities are planned from August 17-21 to encourage community engagement in road safety.

Along with highly visible police on the roads, Snr Const Voigt will be in school classrooms educating students on road safety.
