It was a striking Easter Monday for a Lockyer Valley snake catcher who spent the holiday in hospital after being twice bitten by an eastern brown.

Fortunately for Chris Jennings the sneaky snake didn’t release any venom when it struck him on his right hand and finger during a call out in the region.

As a well known and respected member of the community, many residents took to Facebook for an update on the condition of their beloved snake catcher.

The bites were a first for Mr Jennings, having spent more than 20 years catching and rehoming snakes.

Mr Jennings was attempting to wrangle the eastern brown as it was coming out of an awkward spot when he was struck.

“He was in a bit of an awkward spot to get to and when I went to grab him he struck me on the finger and then hand,” he said.

“Unbeknown to me at the time there was actually snake repellers in the ground at the property, which actually do the opposite in that the vibration attracts them.”

It was quite a shock for the snake catcher who’s used to being the hunter and not the hunted.

Having caught thousands of snakes in his time without gloves on, Mr Jennings said the encounter was just a rare set of circumstances.

“Even with heavy duty gloves on there’s always a risk of being bitten, the gloves do make it more difficult to grab and control the snake especially if it’s a large one,” he said.

Mr Jennings said he’s very fortunate it was only a ‘dry bite’ and was already back to work Tuesday afternoon after having spent a good 13 hours at Ipswich Hospital.

Lockyer Valley Snake Catcher’s were sure to keep community members updated on Chris’s condition via their Facebook page throughout the ordeal, and are very thankful for all the support.
