RACQ spokeswoman Lauren Ritchie said while drivers across the south east and in Toowoomba had experienced some reprieve at the bowser over Christmas and in the first few days of the New Year, the cheap phase of the cycle would not stick around for much longer.

More than 11 per cent of service stations across Greater Brisbane were charging $1.89 or more for regular ULP by 2pm on Thursday.

While fuel prices have remained fairly stable in recent weeks, Ms Ritchie expected more Brisbane servos would continue to hike prices due to the nature of the petrol price cycle.

“There is no evidence of a hike on the Gold and Sunshine Coasts or in Ipswich or Toowoomba just yet, but prices could start to jump at any time,” she said.

“Unfortunately, it’s inevitable prices will climb in the coming weeks as South east Queensland and Toowoomba move into the expensive phase of the price cycle, but the positive is that we’re not expecting average prices to peak quite as high as the records we saw towards the end of 2021.”

She urged drivers to fill up now and use apps to track down the best deals.

“If you’re heading home or away for the weekend, make sure you check prices along your route or at your destination, as you might find it’s actually cheaper to fill up outside your local area,” Ms Ritchie said.

It is unlikely that oil will reach the highs observed in late October or early November, any time soon.
