THE skull of a baby whale washed up on Fraser Island may end up greeting visitors to the Fraser Coast Discovery Centre in a few months time.

Fraser Coast Regional Council has approached Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service about using the skull of one of two humpback whales that have beached and died in the past two months.

"We're hoping that it will be part of one of the main displays in the centre," Fraser Coast council public relations and regional marketing representative Lisa Stephenson said.

Would-be rescuers spent two days attempting to save one of the whales and believed it was on its first migration when herded into shallow waters by sharks.

The other baby whale was believed to have been born this year and was already dead when it was discovered earlier this month.

The carcasses of both whales were moved off the beach and behind sand dunes to decompose naturally.

The Discovery Centre will be part of the $4.9 million Fraser Coast Cultural Centre on Charles St.

It will also house the Regional Art Gallery, a cafe and an administration centre.

It is expected to be open to the public by August next year.
