A Queensland family has been left ‘with no words’ to describe how much they will miss a young soldier who was killed fighting in the Ukraine.

A heartbreaking funeral service has been held in Hervey Bay for Brock Greenwood, who was killed in action on July 5 while fighting for Ukraine.

Brock was a volunteer foreign fighter for the Ukrainian International Foreign Legion for 15 months.

His family was informed in early July that he had been killed after he was reportedly struck by Russian artillery.

His funeral was held at St John’s Anglican Church in Wondunna on Friday.

Dozens of people attended the service honouring the 24-year-old’s life.

Brock’s sister Kodie paid tribute to him, saying she never thought she would have to write a eulogy for her baby brother.

“My mum and I have tried to write this many times, but there are just no words to describe how much we all love and are going to miss Brock, but I will try my very best.”

Kodie said he was a devoted and loving uncle, son and brother.

He had been a student of Yarrilee State School and Hervey Bay State School, Kodie said, and he had a passion for writing music, designing, storytelling, gaming and learning new languages.

“If you knew Brock, you knew he was the king of comebacks,” Kodie said.

“You wouldn’t even try because he would just stump you, or you would end up laughing at whatever witty, funny thing he would come up with.”

Kodie said Brock’s passion and determination took him to Ukraine to fight against Russian invading forces.

“Despite having no prior military experience he excelled, becoming a well-respected team leader, senior sniper, special reconnaissance, an operator of antitank weaponry and a CLS medic,” she said.

“He gave his life trying to save his fellow team member.

“No mother or father should ever had to bury their child, but knowing how much of an impact Brock made on the lives of his fellow soldiers and how brave, kind and selfless he was should make them very proud.

“He is a hero not only in our eyes but those around the country and world.”

Kodie said there were no words to describe the heartache and sadness her family felt, losing such an amazing person.

But Brock had died for something he believed in, she said.

“I’m glad we are all here to honour such a special young man, a man who fought in a war he didn’t have to because he believed he would make a difference and help a country and their families,” Kodie said.

“He went out like a hero and will always be remembered as one.”

Three of Brock’s close mates then spoke, sharing fond memories and how their friend would always be “Uncle Brock” to children he would never meet.

To the strains of If I Die Young, a montage of photos of Brock were shown to those gathered before the funeral service was concluded.
