A funeral will be held later this month for a 24-year-old former Hervey Bay man killed during the war in Ukraine.

Brock Greenwood, was a volunteer foreign fighter for the Ukrainian International Foreign Legion for 15 months.

His family were informed in early July that he had been killed after he was reportedly struck by Russian artillery.

Mr Greenwood’s sister Kodie Greenwood posted an update last week, saying her baby brother was “finally on his way home”.

Previously she had spoken of her immense pride and admiration for her brother.

“He fought for what he believed in and followed his heart,” she wrote on social media.

“He’s my hero and he should be recognised and remembered as the brave, strong, kind, intelligent man he was.”

Mr Greenwood, who was one of five siblings, had no military experience and had never held a gun before venturing overseas to join the conflict

His family originally objected to him going because of his lack of experience.

“That’s what we were really worried about,” Kodie said.

“Even though we stopped him once, he said to me: ‘I’m still going to go, but I can’t be around you and mum because you make me feel guilty and make me want to stay. But it’s what I want to do’.

“He truly was selfless. He wanted to put his life on the line to help people.”

So far $8858 has been raised through a GoFundMe campaign towards a $10,000 target to help the family cover funeral expenses.

Mr Greenwood’s funeral will be held on August 23 from 10am at St John’s Anglican Church in Wondunna.

Australians have been discouraged from travelling to Ukraine, with the federal government enforcing a “do not travel” alert for the war-torn country.
