Mysterious lights baffle Fraser Coast residents as new wave of sightings reported

Multiple witnesses across the Fraser Coast have spotted strange lights in the sky this week, as the region's UFO sightings continue to mystify locals.

A number of Fraser Coast residents this week reported seeing “multiple lights” in the sky that then “disappeared instantly”.

It follows a similar report north of Gympie earlier this week of orange lights in the sky to the west of Glenwood, and of multiple Fraser Coast sightings in January 2025, where a series of similar anomalous phenomena in the night sky was reported, with Hervey Bay and Maryborough skywatchers both capturing strange lights on their phones, some of them moving.

Justin Hughes, a self-employed painter from Hervey Bay, posted a video to a Hervey Bay community page at the time of a “weird” phenomenon.

“I have been seeing numerous things I don’t have any answer too,” his post read.

A video he filmed at Pt Vernon was of a glowing light moving to the left, before stopping and flashing.

Tuesday, November 18, multiple people reported seeing multiple lights.

“Multiple lights that were there in one moment then disappeared instantly before my eyes,” one Scarness resident said.

The Fraser Coast Community News facebook page posted this:

“Residents across the Fraser Coast region reported seeing unusual lights flying in the sky on Tuesday... while the cause of the Fraser Coast sighting remains unknown.”

The post received more than 100 comments, with people revealing multiple experiences.

“I’ve seen lights many times,” said one commenter.

“Especially driving up the country.

“We had a light that would follow us go past across us and then back to next to us but up high.

“We arrived at our place and it just sat out high in the sky for hours.”

“There is way more on and around this planet than we have ever seen,” commented one women.

The Courier Mail in July 2025 published a list of highly unusual sightings and photos taken across Queensland.

According to the Facebook page Strange Skies OVer Wide Bay and Burnett and Fraser Coast: A UFO History, the region that takes in Bundaberg, Hervey Bay, Childers, Gin Gin, Howard, Maryborough, and Mt Perry has a long, fascinating history of UFO and unexplained aerial sightings.

“From the earliest known reports to recent footage shared on social media, residents have consistently reported strange lights, unusual objects, and phenomena that defy easy explanation,” it states.

“This article compiles publicly documented sightings, explores patterns over time, and offers suggestions for further investigation for our paranormal community.

“Early Reports: 1900s–1950s

“Reliable UFO reports from the early 1900s are scarce, largely due to a lack of formal reporting mechanisms. Paranormal folklore and stories of strange lights do exist, but these were rarely documented in newspapers or police records.

“The first widely recognized report comes from Bundaberg in 1952, when three foundry workers reported seeing an oval-shaped flying object high in the sky, moving at unusual speed. Local newspapers covered the story as a “flying saucer” sighting — one of the earliest in Queensland.

“1960s–1980s: The Rise of UFO Awareness

“During this period, UFO reporting became more systematized, particularly with the establishment of UFO Research Queensland (UFORQ).

“• 1984, Hervey Bay: A family observed a slow-moving, stingray-shaped object in the sky through binoculars. The object hovered for several minutes before disappearing.

“• 1970s–1980s, Bundaberg and Maryborough: Several witnesses reported glowing orbs, triangular craft, and other anomalous lights. Police correspondence archived in the Queensland State Archives confirms these events were taken seriously at the time.

“These decades mark a surge in local UFO interest and documentation, laying the groundwork for modern reporting.

“Modern Sightings: 1990s–2025

“Recent decades have seen a resurgence of UFO activity and reporting across the Wide Bay–Burnett and Fraser Coast region.”

Bundaberg

• 1998: A circular object was observed changing color and brightness before vanishing.

• 2004: Two brothers reported fast, hovering lights on the beach for approximately ten minutes.

• 2015: A bright sphere, described as “the same color and intensity as the moon,” moved across the night sky and disappeared behind rooftops.

• 2022: A Bundaberg woman captured mysterious UFO-like objects on camera; several sightings were reported via social media and local news.

Hervey Bay & Maryborough

• 2024–2025: Multiple residents shared videos of glowing, moving lights on social media. Some describe orbs that hover, flash, or change direction abruptly. Experts suggest some could be drones or celestial objects, but the phenomenon remains unexplained in certain cases.

• 1984: Historic stingray-shaped object observed by a family through binoculars.

Childers

• 2013: Witnesses reported recurring mysterious lights in the night sky. While footage is limited, local UFO researchers expressed interest in further investigation.
