A new social introduction to football, for women and girls, is coming to Wide Bay next month.

Girls United, by Football Queensland (FQ), is a 6-a side program which will be open to women over the age of 16, regardless of their experience and knowledge of the game starting from August 11, this year.

The sessions will run for one hour each, including a warm-up intergrading skills focusing on the basics of football.

Girls United has been introduced to provide a safe and inclusive environment for females to have fun, make new friends and stay active.

And, most importantly, to increase female participation in football.

The program is new to Wide Bay.

FQ Central Coast Region General Manager Andy Allan said the program was sparked after knowledge “some women and girls do not commit to the traditional format of 11 a-side football for 20 or more weeks.”

“This is why we have developed Girls United, to provide a space to play football in a social and relaxed setting ... to ensure all participants feel comfortable, we will be running two programs: one for women who have never played before, and another for women who have previous experience in football,” he said.

“Girls United will help us achieve one of our key strategic targets to increase women and girls’ participation in Wide Bay.

“Our vision for football is that everyone feels encouraged to get involved, regardless of age, gender or cultural background ... we encourage all women in Wide Bay to come along and give football a go.”

The six-week program will run until September 17, 2021, with games being held at Martens Oval in Bundaberg.
