A landmark moment is on its way to the PCYC Friday with Hervey Bay Basketball Association launching the first ever round of its under 12 girls’ competition.
It is the first-time girls in this age range in the association have had the chance to solely compete against their peers, previously being forced to compete in mixed competitions or older age groups.
The change has been welcomed by athletes and coaches.
Coach Gillian Stephenson said she was “excited for our girls” saying it was “wonderful to see the number of girls in basketball growing at younger age groups”.
Crocs Basketball Club’s Ashik Naidoo echoed Stephenson‘s thoughts saying it was “awesome” girls were being given more opportunities to excel in sport.
The Crocs had recently launched its Girls Can Ball program, which was the brainchild of Naidoo.

The program was created to encourage girls who had never played the sport to give it a go.
The action kicks off at 4.50pm at the Hervey Bay PCYC, with the round to be followed by a small celebration to mark the occasion.
