Every team needs a Mickey Busby.
A brilliant exponent on the field, he is equally influential off it with his positivity and encouragement, his mateship and mentoring.
It’s the reason he won the Spirit of the Carnival award for The Cathedral College at the recent Confraternity Carnival, according to his coach Tony Martin.
A record 72 schoolboys and schoolgirls teams took part in the event, staged in Rockhampton a fortnight ago.
Fair play, respect and fellowship underpin the spirit of Confraternity and that is celebrated with each team nominating a player to receive the Spirit award at carnival’s end.
Individual awards were also presented to the player judged best and fairest for each team and for TCC, it went to their inspirational skipper Aleki Siale.
The powerhouse prop, who made the carnival’s honorary Queensland team, has been snapped by the North Queensland Cowboys.
TCC finished fourth overall in the boys division after being beaten by eventual winners, St Pat’s Mackay, in the semi-finals.
Martin said Siale and Busby were both deserved winners of their respective awards.
“Aleki just turns up and does his job. He works really hard, he never shirks it,” he said.
“Leading by example is something he does so naturally.
“He’s always looking to improve and he’s always wanting to do better.”
Martin said Busby, the team’s starting hooker, had been good in every game this year.
“He’s incredibly fit, he leads our line speed a lot and he’s a very skilful player,” he said.
“He’s really sharp… and he’s very quick out of dummy half.
“He’s just as energetic off the field. He’s always bouncing around and keeping the morale up.
“He’s a really good kid to have in our group.”

St Patrick’s Mackay broke a 22-year drought to claim the boys shield with a gripping 10-8 grand final win over Padua College, while the TCC girls took the honours with a stirring come-from-behind victory over competition newcomers St James College.
Six TCC team members, including Player of the Carnival Josie Wogand, were named in the honorary Queensland girls team.
St Pat’s gun halfback Adam McSherry and teammate Darcy McFarlane featured in the boys merit team.
