Making harassing phone calls to her boyfriend at the hotel where he was working backfired on a pregnant Maryborough mum. That was only the start of her troubles with police.

Making a series of harassing phone calls to the hotel where her boyfriend was working backfired when a pregnant mum of three found herself before court.

Rebecca Ellen Lakin, 30, was lucky to avoid jail when she faced Maryborough Magistrates Court on drug charges, pleading guilty to possession of cannabis and utensils, and using a carriage service to harass.

The court heard a raid was carried out at Lakin’s home on July 27, 2020, about 9am, with police discovering a water pipe and chopped cannabis weighing less than a gram.

Lakin admitted the utensils and drugs were hers.

Another raid was carried out in September, in which a pipe, bong, electric scales and about two grams of cannabis was discovered.

Police also took three phones from the property.

Lakin later provided the passcode for one of the phones, which had been reset, with its data erased.

She claimed she could not remember the passcodes for the other two phones.

In a separate matter, Lakin admitted to making harassing phone calls to Maryborough’s Post Office Hotel, where her boyfriend was an employee.

She called so often, staff were told to ignore phone calls from her.

Lakin shouted on the phone and accused staff of “hiding him away from her”.

She then threatened to throw stuff at the hotel, the court heard.

The staff were scared of her because of the calls and security cameras were installed at the premises as a result, the court was told.

Lakin had three young children with a fourth on the way, defence lawyer Morgan Harris said.

Her baby was due in 13 weeks.

Mr Harris said his client had been diagnosed with severe depression and anxiety and had just started new medication when the offending happened.

He said she had not maliciously denied access to the phones, but could genuinely not remember the passcodes.

She was intending to move away for a fresh start.

Lakin was sentenced to eight months in prison with immediate release on parole.

She was fined $1000.

Convictions were recorded.
