Big new development for western Hervey Bay proposed for Eli Waters

A snapshot of a major development on the outskirts of Hervey Bay reveals how vacant land west of the city would be transformed into a thriving retail, entertainment and business precinct.

A major development, which would service the growing suburbs west of Eli Waters, is on the table.

This proposal would see the vacant land on the corner of Pialba-Burrum Heads Rd and Drury Lane transformed into a 42,784 square metre precinct with new stores, drive-through food and drink outlets, tavern, childcare centre, supermarket, office space, healthcare services and indoor sport and recreation areas.

The Fraser Coast’s fourth Aldi is also planned for the same patch.

The development application notes a need for a shopping centre to service the western suburbs of Hervey Bay such as Dundowran, Eli Waters and Toogoom.

The proposed site covers 42,784 square metres with access to the area from Pialba Burrum Heads Rd and Drury Lane.

According to the proposal, an estimated 128 jobs would be created during the construction phase of the project with 383 jobs at the shopping centre should the project go ahead.

A total of 510 individual car parks is also part of the plan.

This Eli Waters development proposal is currently being assessed by the Fraser Coast Regional Council.

Division 5 councillor Jade Wellings has been encouraging residents in the area to have their say on the project which will be impact assessable – meaning it’s not assessable under the code and the impact on local residents is a key part of the decision process.

While traffic congestion is expected to be flagged as a concern, infrastructure in the area will soon improve with joint federal and state funding for a major upgrade of the Pialba Burrum Heads Road and Maryborough Hervey Bay Road intersection.

The project is expected to include duplication of Pialba-Burrum Heads Road to four lanes, between Scrub Hill Road and Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road, duplication of Maryborough Hervey Bay Road from Urraween Road to Pialba-Burrum Heads Road, and lights at notorious corner.
