A SHARK thriller filmed in Hervey Bay will make its debut at Hervey Bay BigScreen Cinemas tonight at a special media preview.
The Reef will open for all audiences tomorrow and the preview for the film, which has been screened at the cinema in the lead-up to its release, has been sending shudders down movie-goers' spines.
The Reef is based on true events and tells the tale of Kate, her brother Matt and his girlfriend Suzie who arrive at the Great Barrier Reef to meet up with Kate's ex-lover, Luke.
Luke, who delivers boats for a living with his friend Warren, offers to take the group sailing for a week on a boat he has to deliver to Indonesia.
When the boat suddenly flips, Luke decides the best chance of survival is to swim to a nearby island.
One refuses to go while the others decide to try to make the island but as they swim they realise they are being stalked by a huge shark.
Cinema owner Derek Struik was sure local movie-goers would be keeping an eye out for the local scenery while extras would be keen to see themselves on the big screen.
“I think it's the sort of movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat for a while,” he said.
Mr Struik said he was expecting a big crowd for the premiere tonight.
But he said the shark scenes should not put anyone off swimming in Hervey Bay waters.
“The shark scenes were filmed in South Australia, so it's not a problem,” he said.
