Police have spoken about the three-day search for a submerged car in dam waters near Maryborough after police divers located a man’s body. VIDEO.

Police spoke at a press conference about the three-day search for a submerged car in dam waters in Granville which ended in tragedy.

After several days of searching a swollen Fraser Coast dam, police have spoken about the discovery of a car with the body of a 77-year-old man inside.

It comes after police were alerted to vehicle tracks on Walkers Point Road in Granville, leading to a nearby dam on Sunday.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Senior Constable Brenda Nielsen from the Maryborough Forensic Crash Unit said police could not speculate on how the accident happened.

“At this stage we really don’t know why he was in the area that will have to come in due course with our investigation,” Ms Nielsen said.

She said the police divers found the man’s body in the back of the vehicle and a local towing company removed the car from the dam.

About noon on Tuesday, Brisbane police divers attended and recovered a submerged vehicle in seven metre-deep dam waters.

A Hervey Bay man was found dead inside a black Mazda CX7 Wagon.

According to police, initial investigations suggest the man may have been driving north on Walkers Point Road when he tried to negotiate a sharp bend near the dam and then entered the water.

Maryborough Forensic Crash Investigators are appealing for witnesses, especially those with dashcam footage capturing the moments leading up to and including the crash, to come forward to police.

The Fraser Coast Chronicle understands the dam has been swollen since the Fraser Coast flood events earlier this year, in addition to recent rain.

The waterway had only recently started to recede before the rain started again.

Maryborough Forensic Crash Investigators will prepare a report for the corner.
