An 18-year-old has been fined for hooning offences during a police crackdown just weeks after a woman was killed in an alleged hit and run incident.

A police crackdown on hooning across the Fraser Coast has resulted in an 18-year-old man being fined for multiple offences.

The driver of the Holden Commodore was intercepted on Maryborough-Hervey Bay Rd in Urraween about 10.30pm on June 1 after he allegedly completed a burnout on a wet road.

The vehicle was allegedly observed being driven dangerously before officers intercepted the driver.

The man was issued a traffic infringement notice for wilfully driving vehicle in a way that makes unnecessary noise or smoke, which included a fine of $495 and two demerit points.

The Type 1 offence also resulted in the Commodore being subject to a 90-day vehicle immobilisation.

It comes after the Chronicle shared the community’s concerns regarding hooning in the wake of the death of Hervey Bay mum Tash Raven in an alleged hit and run.

Last month, 41-year-old Urangan man Brett David Eddy faced court charged with manslaughter, dangerous operation of a vehicle, driving of a motor vehicle without a driver’s licence and driver fail to exhibit proper respect to deceased showing callous disregard for the needs of a person in relation to the incident involving Ms Raven.

Police allege Mr Eddy was travelling at speeds well above the speed limit of 60km/h when he allegedly struck Ms Raven on Boundary Rd on May 26.

Despite the best efforts of emergency services, she died at the scene.

He did not apply for bail and the matter was adjourned until July 25.

Among those speaking out about the region’s hooning crisis was Leonard Camm of Maryborough who said hooning in his residential area was “like torture” for his family.

“We lived on a four-lane highway in Melbourne and it was nothing like this,” Mr Camm said.

Highway Patrol Maryborough Officer in Charge Sergeant Josh Churchward said police shared the community’s frustration with illegal hooning on the Fraser Coast.

“If you are caught driving dangerously, you will face the consequences,” Sgt Churchward said.

“Police continue to use a variety of intelligence and enforcement methods at our disposal to stamp out this type of behaviour.

“Unfortunately, a small element of our community do not get the message and continue to risk the lives of others by their actions and stupidity.

“If you are the family member or friend of a person you suspect is engaging in illegal hooning, please take the opportunity to influence and correct that behaviour – or police will step in to ensure community safety.

“We encourage anyone who witnesses hooning or any type of dangerous driving to report it to police via Policelink or Crime Stoppers.

“Dashcam footage is also highly valuable, but if you don’t have that, it’s important to note the vehicle registration details, make, model and any unique identifying features to assist follow-up investigations.”
