A Point Vernon man has been refused bail after he allegedly “slashed” another with a knife on Thuesday night.

Police will allege 36-year-old Anthony Glenn Hovington got in a verbal argument with a 64-year-old man and 57-year-old woman on Shell Street, Urangan about 10pm on February 1.

They further allege Mr Hovington grabbed a knife from a nearby building and used it to slash the older man across his neck.

Police prosecutor Louese McConnell told the Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on Friday the incident “could have ended much worse” with paramedics at the scene noting the cut across the victim’s neck had “just missed his artery”.

Appearing in court via camera link, Mr Hovington applied for bail through duty solicitor Virginia Ukpabi, who said his behaviour on the night had been “triggered by his and his family’s lack of stable accommodation” as well as an “underlying issue he had with alcohol”.

Ms Ukpabi told the court Mr Hovington had moved from Tasmania to Hervey Bay 14 years ago “to escape a bad crowd”.

Since moving he had met a “supportive partner with whom he had two children and stayed out of trouble”, she said.

“Mr Hovington is financially responsible for his family and is the only one with a driver’s licence,” the court heard.

Mrs McConnell opposed the application for bail, telling the court Mr Hovington was an unacceptable risk to the community due to his “troubling history” which she said included armed robbery and firearms offences in Tasmania.

“The defendant approached the victim who was at the front of his unit” and an argument broke out resulting in Mr Hovington “headbutting, wrestling and slashing the victim with a knife”, she said.

Police arrived on the scene soon after, where they took Mr Hovington into custody and charged him with obstructing police, going armed to cause fear, serious assault, wounding and wilful damage of police property.

Police allege Mr Hovington resisted police direction and caused damage to the inside of a police vehicle.

The 64-year-old alleged victim was transported to Hervey Bay Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Magistrate Trinity McGarvie rejected Mr Hovington’s application for bail, telling him “the police case against you is strong as are the charges you are facing”.

She noted his nominated bail address, The Shelly Beach Caravan Park was “not a stable address” and he had a “history of breaching bail and weapons offences”.

He will remain in custody, with a committal mention scheduled for March 28.
