A witness to a horror crash that claimed the life of a motorcyclist on Friday has told of the desperate fight to save the man’s life.

The Apple Tree Creek man, identified as David Potter, 60, was killed when the Harley Davidson motorcycle he was riding and a van collided at Burrum River.

Wide Bay Burnett Forensic Crash Unit Sergeant Glen Rusten said Mr Potter had been travelling on Burrum Heads Rd towards Burrum Heads about 11.30am when it happened.

At the same time, the driver of a white van was trying to turn into a property on the road.

The two vehicles collided as Mr Potter came around a “sweeping curve” and he was thrown from the bike.

He died at the scene.

Witness Ralph Schuoz said he had been on his way to Bundaberg when he saw the van stop on the road.

He did not see the motorcyclist until he saw the man in a ditch when he stopped to help.

Mr Schuoz called 000 while another person tried to talk to the critically wounded rider, but he was unresponsive, he said.

Attempts were made to give him CPR and then a paramedic and nurse came upon the scene and tried to resuscitate him.

It was a very “sad, horrible feeling to watch somebody die”, Mr Schuoz said.

A 70-year-old Hervey Bay man driving the van and a 70-year-old female passenger were transported to Hervey Bay Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Witnesses or anyone with relevant vision is urged to contact police.

Police blocked the road for several hours to investigate the circumstances around the crash.

Those investigations are ongoing.
