Stashing drugs in her underwear and trying to smuggle them into Maryborough jail landed a young woman in District Court.

Tamica Rose Coman, 25, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to one count of supplying dangerous drugs in a correctional facility.

The court heard Coman visited the prison where her cousin was an inmate about 12.30pm on April 29 last year and was subjected to a number of scans.

Officers had been monitoring the prisoner’s communications and visits and Coman was detained and transported for an interview.

When guards asked Coman if she had any contrabandshe removed a small plastic package from the back of her underwear which contained strips of buprenorphine, the court heard.

She declined an interview at the time and was released on bail.

The court heard Coman had been contacted by her cousin, who told her there was some risk to his safety in custody if she did not help him.

There had also been an offer of money which did not eventuate and Coman had received nothing for the “risk that she took”.

She came from a disadvantaged background and only completed school up to Year 9 but had been able to keep a job, was currently working at a cleaning business owned by a friend’s mother and living with friends in a “stable” home.

Judge Leanne Clare said Coman had a limited and minor criminal history.

“You had tried to smuggle the drug in for your cousin, who claimed it was necessary for his safety,” she said.

“Prisons are the one place where sobriety should be guaranteed.

“People who see to sneak drugs inside would undermine that protection.

“The very presence of drugs in prison would undermine the administration of order and the authority exercised in a prison.

“That is why this is a serious offence.”

Judge Clare said she took into account Coman’s difficult childhood where there were drugs in the home and she was neglected.

“There is genuine remorse and it is clear that the prospect of jail has had a profound impact on you,” she said.

“That is what it’s intended to do.”

Coman was sentenced to six months in prison but was immediately released on parole.
