A single Facebook message located in a woman’s spam folder containing a man’s name has cost its sender a large fine.
The man pleaded guilty to breaching a domestic violence order and breaching bail when he faced Maryborough Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
According the to the terms of the order, the man was not allowed to contact the woman.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Balam Selvadurai said the victim had been checking her Facebook’s spam folder when she saw a message from the defendant.
The message contained a man’s name.
Sgt Selvadurai said the woman gave a statement to police saying the name had significant meaning as the defendant had “tried to pressure her into having sexual intercourse” with a man of that name while he watched, which had caused a great deal of tension in their relationship.
She told police the message made her feel sick to the stomach because of the context in which it was sent.
Defence lawyer Morgan Harris said the man was gainfully employed working on rural properties six days a week.
His employer spoke highly of him and his work ethic, Mr Harris said.
The man was fined a total of $1200 for both offences and convictions were recorded.
